*CANSIM is Canadian Socio Economic Information Management System, the largest computerized Statistics Canada Time Series database where the information is arranged by successive dates and formatted into structures known as matrices. The Matrix consolidates individual data series which are related through content or some other logical link such as seasonal adjustment. The Series is one item of a matrix which contains a chronological list of data observations for a particular concept or element. Matrices are usually organized in a hierarchical structure determined by totals and sub-totals of the information. Each item (series) has a series number identifier and a unique databank number identifier or Dnumber.
For example: Matrix 9957 is a unique identifier of a pre-determined selection of series. Databank number P200000 is the unique identifier for a series in matrix 9957. It is comprised of up to 7 characters beginning with one alphabetic character followed by up to six numeric characters. Today the database contains 674,700 series grouped into 7,346 matrices.
